De rijke en veelzijdige collectie is ontstaan vanuit de passie van 1.700 particuliere verzamelaars. Zij hebben in de bijna 170 jaar dat het museum bestaat maar liefst 50.000 kunstobjecten geschonken. Zijn naam dankt de collectie aan Frans Boijmans en Daniël George van Beuningen. Zij voegden vele topstukken toe net als hun opvolgers. Van beeldende kunst, toegepaste kunst tot design. De collectie tekeningen is een van de belangrijkste ter wereld. De collectie van Boijmans Van Beuningen biedt een overzicht van de Nederlandse en Europese kunst, van de vroege middeleeuwen tot in de 21e eeuw. Tot de collectie behoren onder andere de ‘Toren van Babel’ van Bruegel, de ‘Titus’van Rembrandt en de 'Lippenbank' van Salvador Dalí

Tijdens de sluiting van het museum en voorafgaand aan de opening van het depot in 2021 blijft de collectie (151.000 kunstwerken) zoveel mogelijk zichtbaar in binnen-en buitenland. Met de opening van het gloednieuwe Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen krijgt de collectie een permanente opslaglocatie die publiek toegankelijk is.

The rich and versatile collection originated from the passion of 1,700 private collectors. In the almost 170 years that the museum has existed, they have donated no fewer than 50,000 art objects. The collection owes its name to Frans Boijmans and Daniël George van Beuningen. They added many top pieces just like their successors. From visual art, applied art to design. The collection of drawings is one of the most important in the world. The Boijmans Van Beuningen collection offers an overview of Dutch and European art, from the early Middle Ages to the 21st century. The collection includes Bruegel's "Tower of Babel", Rembrandt's "Titus" and Salvador Dalí's "Lipsbank"

During the closing of the museum and prior to the opening of the depot in 2021, the collection (151,000 works of art) will remain as visible as possible at home and abroad. With the opening of the brand-new Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen, the collection will have a permanent storage location that is accessible to the public.
