Beloved: Dalí, Kusama, Morisot, Rothko and many others come home to Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen

From Saturday 23 March 2024, Beloved & Beloved XL at Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen brings together almost 100 highlights from the collection of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. The works by Salvador Dalí, Vincent van Gogh, Yayoij Kusama, Berthe Morisot, Rembrandt and many others have not been seen in Rotterdam for several years.

The selection covers a wide range of styles and movements from the Renaissance and Dutch masters to Impressionism, Surrealism to contemporary masterpieces. Among the highlights are The Glorification of the Virgin by Geertgen tot Sint Jans, The Tower of Babel by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Grey, Orange on Maroon, No. 8 by Mark Rothko and The Kiss (Bela Lugosi) by Andy Warhol.

175 years

Beloved is a celebration of the 175th anniversary of the founding of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. Visitors will find almost eighty paintings and several sculptures on the Depot’s spacious fifth floor, and larger works – Beloved XL – by artists such as Donald Judd, Yayoij Kusama, Bridget Riley, Mark Rothko and others elsewhere in the building.

Public vote

In recent years, visitors to the Depot have had a chance to vote for their favourite work from the museum’s collection and give a reason for their choice. Huge numbers of people have voted and the results can be seen in the exhibition. One highlight is being shown by each selected artist, providing a wonderful cross-section of 175 years of the museum’s history of collecting paintings, sculptures and installations. The public’s top ten works will be announced later.
