Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen was one of 33 nominees. It was also the only Dutch museum that was nominated in 2023. In previous years, the Dutch museums Rijksmuseum Boerhaave, Naturalis Biodiversity Center and Museum van de Geest | Dolhuys were lauded by EMYA.

From the EMYA 2023 Jury Report about Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen, a building that was designed by MVRDV architects from Rotterdam and opened its doors to public in November 2021:

“A museum that is committed to promoting openness, accessibility, and transparency through its innovative approach and efforts to make its collection publicly accessible. By doing so, Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen, challenges the traditional notion of an art museum and whom it is meant for. Visitors can experience its art collections, conservation practices, and the concept of an open city storage in a completely novel way.”

The annual conference and gala of EMYA were held in Spain, in the weekend of 3-6 May, at MUHBA, the historical museum of Barcelona. The Main Prize, the European Museum of the Year 2023 was awarded to L’ETNO, the ethnological museum of Valencia.
