Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen closed for major renovations in 2019, but only metres away an entirely new building arose. Opening its doors to the public in 2021, Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen is the joint dream of architect Winy Maas and Boijmans director Sjarel Ex. This documentary explores the creation of the first publicly accessible art storage building, where visitors get a behind-the-scenes look at the museum. Using archive footage of Bouw Museum Boymans, striking parallels are drawn between the Depot and the construction of the 1930s museum building.

With infectious excitement, Maas and Ex share the story of a stripped-down museum and the brand new Depot, sharing their passionate vision of past and present. Itself a monument to the future, this film reveals museum secrets and details that normally remain hidden. Both Boijmans buildings reveal themselves amongst a wealth of artworks, and the result is an affectionate symphony of art and architecture.
