From August 5th , the museum is empty and the keys have been handed over to Rotterdam City Council. The entire collection will come together again in 2021. In the meantime, parts of the collection will remain visible in Rotterdam and further afield.
All works of art have now been removed from the building as part of the museum’s extensive renovation and modernisation programme. After seven months of removals, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is now empty. On Monday 5 August the keys were handed over to Rotterdam City Council, the owner of the building. The museum will open its doors again seven years from now.
During the rebuilding, the collection will remain visible as part of ‘Boijmans Next Door’, in which eight neighbouring institutions are hosting exhibitions featuring works from the museum’s collection; ‘Boijmans Abroad’, a series of international travelling exhibitions with masterpieces from the collection; and ‘Boijmans in the Classroom’, in which artworks from the collection are being used as teaching aids in schools in Rotterdam.
